CHINA SCHOLAR TO MARK PITT RETIREMENT WITH PROVOST'S DISTINGUISHED LECTURE Endowment fund established in his honor
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 9 -- Cho-yun Hsu, renowned professor of history and sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, will mark his retirement by delivering the Provost's Distinguished Lecture, "Ancient China Revisited,"
3:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13 in Room 125 of the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Oakland.
Hsu, who joined the Pitt faculty in 1970, was born in Amoy, China in 1930. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the premier academic institution in Taiwan, National Taiwan University, before pursuing doctoral studies in ancient history at the University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. in 1962 and returned to National Taiwan University to teach, eventually becoming chair of the history department and a Research Fellow in the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica.
Hsu's outstanding academic career is highlighted by election to Academia Sinica in 1982, visiting professorships at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hawaii, and numerous honors from academic institutions in Taiwan, the United States, and the People's Republic of China. His many scholarly publications in English and Chinese range over a variety of topics from Western Chou civilization, Han agriculture and the social history of ancient China to comparison of Islamic and Chinese astronomical systems.
For many years, Hsu also has been active in encouraging the integration of scholarship across the U.S.-Asia divide. As executive director of the American Council for the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchanges since its formation, Hsu has played a leading role in advancing the institutional development of Chinese Studies in the United States.
On the occasion of his retirement, Hsu has established an endowment to provide research stipends for graduate students in Asian history, history and Asian Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Contributions can be made to the University of Pittsburgh with C.Y. Hsu Endowment Fund noted on the check.
