ENGINEERING AND ARTS & SCIENCES AT PITT RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM USX FOUNDATION
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 18 -- The USX Foundation has awarded grants totaling $2.75 million to the University of Pittsburgh to support programs in the School of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences. The major portion of the funds will be used to establish the USX Corporation Dean's Chair in the School of Engineering. The remaining funds will go to the College of Arts and Sciences for endowment purposes, and to the Department of Materials Science in the School of Engineering in support of a fellowship in metallurgy.
Unlike traditional endowed chairs, which typically support the scholarly or research efforts of one individual, the income from the Dean's Chair endowment will be used as a dean's discretionary fund to support the development and enhancement of programs and projects throughout the School of Engineering.
Thomas J. Usher, chairman and chief executive officer of USX, noted that the decisions to award the grants, which will be payable over five years, were made during the 97-98 academic year. "We have a strong belief in the importance of the University of Pittsburgh to our company, our industry and our region," he said. "These funds will bolster an already strong program by providing resources that will help the University take advantage of new opportunities in the years ahead."
Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg expressed the University's gratitude for the support. "Receiving support of this magnitude from one of the outstanding corporate citizens of our region and of the world is a tangible indication that the goals which we have set for the University are both important and achievable," he said. "USX and the University of Pittsburgh have each played key roles in stimulating and sustaining progress in Southwestern Pennsylvania. We deeply appreciate this further investment in our partnership. As the son of a life-long US Steel employee, I feel personally privileged to be a part of the links between Pitt and USX."
