SEE STARS DURING ALLEGHENY OBSERVATORY' S OPEN HOUSE
PITTSBURGH, August 6 -- It's not Spago, but Pittsburghers will have their only opportunity this year to see their favorite stars and other heavenly bodies Friday, Sept. 24, when the University of Pittsburgh's Allegheny Observatory holds its open house. Admission is free, but reservations are required and only the first 600 to respond by Friday, Sept. 3 will be invited.
To reserve tickets, call (412) 321-2400. Reservations for tours and viewing can be made in half-hour increments from 7 until 10 p.m. Once visitors enter the observatory, they are welcome to stay until closing.
All three telescopes, including the 30-inch Thaw Refractor, will be in operation and open to the public. Visitors can see a slide presentation and a
self-guided tour of the observatory. The Amateur Astronomer's Association of Pittsburgh will make additional telescopes available on the front lawn.
The 86-year-old observatory, in Riverview Park at 159 Riverview Ave., is America's largest scientific observatory in a major city.
