KUNTU REPERTORY THEATRE OFFERS FREE WORKSHOP AND DISCUSSION WITH NEW YORK DIRECTOR WOODIE KING, JR.
PITTSBURGH, March 9 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Kuntu Repertory Theatre is offering a free workshop and presentation on black theater in America, its history and future, from 7 to 9 p.m., on Monday, March 20, in the auditorium of the newly-renovated Masonic Temple, 4227 Fifth Avenue, Oakland.
The session will be conducted by Woodie King, Jr., founder and producing director of New York's famed New Federal Theatre, who is in Pittsburgh to director Kuntu's world-premiere production of Rob Penny's "Nefertari Rising," being presented March 23 through April 8.
King's directing credits are extensive and include work in film and theater. His honors include an Audelco Award, an NAACP Image Award, and an Obie Award for sustained achievement. Among the theaters and venues where he has directed are the Cleveland Playhouse, New York Shakespeare Festival, Inner City Cultural Center in Los Angeles, Ford's Theatre, Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn, the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, and on Broadway.
