JOHN M. BURKOFF NAMED ASSOCIATE DEAN OF PITT SCHOOL OF LAW
PITTSBURGH, March 28 -- Professor John M. Burkoff has been named associate dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law effective July, 2000. He replaces Rhonda Wasserman, who will return to the law faculty as a full-time professor. Burkoff, who also serves as a consulting lawyer,"of counsel," to the Pittsburgh law firm of Marcus & Shapira, will resign that position on April 1, 2000.
Pitt professor of law since 1976, Burkoff is an author, teacher, public speaker, lawyer, and expert witness. He has published eight books and over 50 articles in the areas of criminal justice, human rights, and legal ethics. A 1987 recipient of the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award at Pitt, Burkoff also has been nominated by the University for the national "Professor of the Year" award.
A graduate of the University of Michigan (A.B., J.D.) and Harvard University (LL.M.), Burkoff has been involved with legal projects and legal education around the world. Just this month, he lectured in Iceland at the University of Iceland School of Law, the Iceland Bar Association, and the Iceland Judges Association, and consulted with the Iceland Supreme Court Criminal Rules Committee and the Iceland Human Rights Centre, all under the auspices of a U.S. State Department program coordinated by the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik.
Burkoff also has worked for U.S. Embassies abroad on human rights projects in Burundi and Kenya, and on draft legislation or litigation for the governments of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ethiopia. In addition, Burkoff has twice taught on the Institute of Shipboard Education's "Semester at Sea" program, as it sailed around the world. He was the academic dean of Semester at Sea on the Fall, 1996 voyage.
Burkoff, who previously served as a Ford Foundation Fellow at Harvard Law School, is also a past chairperson of the Criminal Justice Section of the Association of American Law Schools. He was the first chairperson of Pittsburgh's Citizen Police Review Board.
