PITT'S BLUE AND GOLD SOCIETY WINS CASE AWARD
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 12 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Blue and Gold Society recently received the "Outstanding Organization Award" from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) at the CASE 2000 Association of Student Advancement Programs International Assembly in Phoenix.
Mary Jean Lovett, Blue and Gold Society advisor, and Jennifer Smith, president, accepted the award for the Society.
Established in 1991, the Blue and Gold Society is a group of undergraduate students who act as ambassadors of the University and help to promote a positive image of Pitt and its students. Since its inception, the Society has represented the student body and the Alumni Association at University, community, and alumni functions.
Society members participate in community service activities each year including: Operation Santa Claus, a gift drive to benefit Family House; Big Brothers and Big Sisters; and the Pittsburgh Project, a neighborhood cleanup effort. In addition, students have acted as representatives for visits by the president of Ghana, the prime minister of Luxembourg, former President George Bush, Attorney General Janet Reno, and Pennsylvania Governors Dick Thornburgh and Tom Ridge.
