POET MARILYN CHIN TO APPEAR AT PITT'S PITTSBURGH CONTEMPORARY WRITERS SERIES

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 -- The Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series will feature poet Marilyn Chin on Thursday, March 15, at 8:15 p.m., in the University of Pittsburgh's Frick Fine Arts Auditorium, Schenley Drive, Oakland.

Chin is the author of "Dwarf Bamboo" and "The Phoenix Gone, The Terrace Empty." Her latest book, "The Ballad of the Plain Yellow Girl," will be published in the fall of 2001. Her books have become Asian American Classics and are taught in classrooms throughout the nation.

Chin has won numerous awards for her poetry, including two National Endowment for the Arts writing fellowships, the Stegner Fellowship, the PEN/Josephine Miles Award, four Pushcart Prizes, a Fulbright Fellowship to Taiwan, residencies at Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, the Djerassi Foundation, and others.

A variety of anthologies contain Chin's work, including "The Norton Introduction to Poetry," "The Oxford Anthology of Modern American Poetry," "Unsettling America," "The Open Boat," and "The Best American Poetry of 1996."

Chin, who co-directs the MFA program at San Diego State University, was featured in Bill Moyers' PBS series, "The Language of Life."

The Contemporary Writers Series is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Wyndham Garden Hotel-University Place, The Book Center, Western Pennsylvania Writing Project, Department of Africana Studies, The Women's Studies Program, Center for Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, University of Pittsburgh Press, Creative Nonfiction, Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, and the Honors College.
