PITT'S ASIAN STUDIES PROGRAM NAMES NEW DIRECTOR

PITTSBURGH—Bell Yung, an ethnomusicologist and professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named director of the Asian Studies Program in Pitt's University Center for International Studies (UCIS). He replaces Patricia Stranahan, who was named provost at Hobart and William Smith colleges in Geneva, NY.
Yung, who will be on leave from the University during the fall term, will assume his new duties in January 2002. Jonathan Wolff, associate director of the Asian Studies Program, will serve as acting director during the fall term.
"The University of Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a scholar and teacher with the tremendous international stature of Professor Bell Yung leading the Asian Studies Program," said UCIS Director William Brustein. "Under his leadership, the program will continue to be one of the pre-eminent such programs in the nation."
Yung, who has been at the University since 1981, earned the Ph.D. degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Ph.D. degree in music from Harvard University. His current research projects include blind story-tellers of southern China and their songs, a critical study of the Cantonese opera "Princess Chang Ping," and the life and work of master qin musician Tsar The-yun.
