PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Community Leisure-Learn Program celebrates its 40th anniversary with an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. July 28 in Trees Hall, Allequippa and Darragh streets, Oakland.

Pitt initiated the Community Leisure-Learn Program through its Department of Health and Physical Activity (HPA) to offer local residents the opportunity to improve their overall health and physical well-being. It is the University’s oldest outreach program. Community recreational programs are offered to both children and adults.

P.A.C.K. (Physical Activities Camp for Kids), a five-week camp held in the summer for those entering grades 5 through 8, provides instruction in sports and lifetime activities. Priority to participate in P.A.C.K. is given to youth from local underserved neighborhoods. P.A.C.K. participants will be on hand at the open house.

Other physical activity programs for youth held throughout the year include Saturday Kids for children in grades 1 through 8, which offers one hour of instruction each in both dance and martial arts; P.A.W.S. (Pitt Athletes Working with Students) for children in grades 5 through 8, which provides two hours of instruction in various sports by 10 different Pitt coaches and their student athletes; and P.L.A.Y.E.R.S. (Pitt’s Local Area Youth Exercise, Recreation, and Sports) for those in grades 9 to 12, which gives a choice of team basketball or such individual recreational activities as rock climbing, racquetball, weight training, and martial arts.

Leisure-Learn offers adults the Parent Fitness 101 program for parents and guardians of the Saturday Kids and PAWS programs. Pitt HPA students offer assistance in the weight room and with aerobic classes. The Guest Pass Program provides membership to use the facilities at Trees Hall for those who reside in the 15213 and 15219 ZIP codes.
