Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems Kicks Off Fall 2010 Speaker Series Sept. 17

Pitt professor to discuss race issues in contemporary Cuba

PITTSBURGH—Alejandro de la Fuente, University Center for International Studies Research Professor of history and Latin American studies, opens the Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Fall 2010 Speaker Series at noon Sept. 17 with a lecture titled “Writing the History of Cuba’s Future: Debates on Race and History in Contemporary Cuba.” 

The talk will take place at Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), School of Social Work Conference Center, 20th floor, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. It is free and open to the public, and registration is not required; lunch will be provided. For more information, call 412-624-7382. 

An accomplished author, scholar, and educator with an interest in race and race relations, de la Fuente joined Pitt’s faculty in 2000. He teaches courses on the history of Cuba and Latin American social revolutions. 

De la Fuente is the author of Havana and the Atlantic in the Sixteenth Century (UNC Press, 2008) and A Nation for All: Race, Inequality, and Politics in Cuba, 1900-1990s (UNC Press, 2001), which also was published in Spanish as Una nación para todos: Raza, desigualdad y política en Cuba, 1900-2000 (Madrid, 2001). His work on race and slavery in Cuba has been published in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, and Italian. He also is the curator of the art exhibition Queloides: Race and Racism in Cuban Contemporary Art, which will be opening at Pittsburgh’s Mattress Factory Museum on Oct. 15. He received both his graduate certificate in Latin American studies and his PhD in history from Pitt. 

CRSP’s annual Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Fall 2010 Speaker Series provides an opportunity for faculty, students, and members of the community to engage in race-related discussions of mutual interest.
