Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Columnist Tony Norman to Lecture Dec. 8 at Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems

PITTSBURGH—Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist, will deliver a free public lecture titled “Columnizing in a Postracial World” at noon Dec. 8 in the University of Pittsburgh’s Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), School of Social Work Conference Center, 20th floor, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Norman was once the Post-Gazette’s pop music/pop culture critic and appeared as an expert on cultural issues on local radio talk shows and television programs. In 1996, he began writing an award-winning general interest column, which, he says, rejuvenated his enthusiasm for the kind of journalism that makes a difference. 

Norman’s column has earned him first place honors from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, and the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation. He also won a Matrix Award from Women in Communications and an Award of Excellence in feature writing from the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. 

In June 2010, Norman shared the stage with several national experts on race issues as part of Race in America, a national conference held at Pitt that attracted 700 educators and social workers from across the country. Norman is a regular commentator for KD/PG Sunday Edition and also teaches at Chatham University.
