Pitt Organizations Recognize Businesses Operating Locally for Commitment to Ethics at Second Annual Financial Stewardship Award Ceremony

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership and Pitt’s chapter of the international financial information honorary organization Beta Alpha Psi recently held their second annual Financial Stewardship Award ceremony. McCrory & McDowell LLC and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) received awards in recognition of their commitment to ethical actions in everyday operations.
 

The Berg Center and Beta Alpha Psi established the awards to recognize the ethical practices and achievements of financial service companies operating in the Pittsburgh area. Applicants are judged on their everyday operations and philosophies as well as their response to challenges; the criteria are based on the principles and standards of the Pittsburgh Business Ethics Awards (PBEA). The annual PBEA event is sponsored by the Society of Financial Service Professionals; financial service companies are ineligible to receive the PBEA award.
 

Because of the number of highly qualified applicants, both a small and a large company receive the Financial Stewardship Award annually.
 

This year’s winner in the small-company category is McCrory & McDowell LLC. The company’s Dewey and Kaye division focuses exclusively on nonprofit consulting. McCrory & McDowell LLC also works actively with such organizations as the United Way and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In addition, it maintains a paperless work environment and a regular system of recycling/donating unneeded equipment.
 
PwC is this year’s winner in the large-company category. This company provides resources to outside parties and enables them to raise concerns at www.pwc.com/ethics. In addition, it encourages charitable contributions from staff by offering 10 hours of paid time off for volunteer opportunities each year. PwC also has publicly committed to reducing its carbon footprint 20 percent by 2012.

The David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership is part of Pitt’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Administration. The center focuses on the education of undergraduate business students through a certificate program that immerses students in the principles of ethics and leadership throughout a three-year period. It also supports important research in the area of ethics and leadership by faculty and undergraduate students.

Beta Alpha Psi is an international honorary organization that enhances the university educational experience by providing interaction with finance, information systems, and accounting professionals; conducting technical and personal-development programs through campus, regional. and national meetings; and promoting and encouraging community service.
