9/21 A lecture titled “Signos Preñados: Deriva en Texto/Pregnant Signs: Textual Wanderings” with Guadalupe Santa Cruz and Eduardo Lalo will be held at 5:25 p.m. in Room 139, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The free lecture, sponsored by Pitt’s Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures, Center for Latin American Studies, and School of Arts and Sciences’ Office of Undergraduate Studies, will be in Spanish and open to questions in English. 9/23 The Fall 2011 Wherrett Lecture titled “Social Capital and Equality” will be presented by Robert Putnam, a Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Sponsored by the Center for Metropolitan Studies and Congress of Neighboring Communities (CONNECT), the lecture will be held at 10 a.m. at the University Club, Ballroom B, 123 University Place, Oakland. The event is free but RSVPs are requested at CMSGSPIA@pitt.edu or 412-648-2282. Putnam has served as adviser to U.S. presidents and other international leaders. His recent research includes the changing role of religion in contemporary American civic life and how diversity and immigration, social and economic equality, and social capital are related.

Through 10/21 Pitt’s Department of Studio Arts is presenting an exhibition titled On a Lucky Day a Surprising Balance of Forms and Spaces Will Appear, artwork by the Studio Arts faculty. The exhibition is held in the University Art Gallery, Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays. The gallery is closed on Monday, Oct. 10.
