11/16  Meng Ren, a graduate student in Pitt’s Department of Music, will deliver a lecture titled “ ‘Why Are the Flowers So Beautiful?’: Changing Cultural Policies for a United Chinese Identity—A Study of the Hua’er (Flower Song) Tradition in the Northwest of China” at noon, 4130 Posvar Hall, 230 S. 11/18   Kun Qian, assistant professor in Pitt’s Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, will present a lecture titled “The Catastrophic Imperative: The Discourse of Disease in Gu Changwei’s Film Love, For Life” at noon, 4130 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. Light refreshments will be served.

11/18  Pitt’s African Music and Dance Ensemble will create a unique African cultural experience at 8 p.m., Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 S. Bellefield Ave., Oakland. Advance tickets are $8.50 general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens and are available at www.proartstickets.org or at 412-394-3353. Tickets at the door are $15 general admission and $10 for students and senior citizens. The event is free for Pitt students with a valid ID.

11/18  The Emerging Legend Series presents a free performance by folksingers Jennie Snyder and Bruce Hoffman, from noon to 1 p.m., Cup & Chaucer Café, ground floor, Hillman Library, 3960 Forbes Ave., Oakland. 11/20  Pitt’s Department of Music’s ensemble in residence, IonSound Project, will present a concert titled “From the Mundane to the Macabre,” 7 p.m., Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 S. Bellefield Ave., Oakland. The concert represents the first installment of IonSound’s Leaving a Legacy project—a fundraising initiative to finance new compositions. The group will perform commissions by three Pittsburgh composers—Christian Kriegeskotte, Philip Thompson, and Nizan Leibovich. Each work on the program is inspired by or created in collaboration with a visual art form. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the door. 11/18  Pitt’s University Library System will mark its first Audubon Day with a free public display of more than 20 original prints from John James Audubon’s Birds of America from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room, Room 363, Hillman Library, 3960 Forbes Ave., Oakland. An afternoon presentation about Pitt’s effort to preserve and digitize the collection will take place from 1-2 p.m. in the Amy Knapp Room, ground floor, Hillman Library.
