MEDIA ADVISORY: University of Pittsburgh Offers Story Ideas for This Year’s 11-11-11 Veterans Day
PITTSBURGH—Member of the media seeking to write stories about the Nov. 11 Veterans Day are invited to cover the following two events at the University of Pittsburgh.
Lecture by a member of the original U.S. Army company portrayed in Band of Brothers who landed in Normandy during World War II

Col. Edward D. Shames, a member of E Company (“Easy”) of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, the group that landed at Normandy during World War II, will deliver a lecture titled “A Brother’s Tale,” in which he will discuss his experiences during the war and how the platoon was portrayed in the 2001 HBO series Band of Brothers, based on the book of the same title by historian Stephen E. Ambrose. The event is sponsored by Pitt’s Office of Veterans Services and College of General Studies Student Government. For more information, call 412-624-9162.
Remembrance Day National Roll Call

The Pitt community has assembled 150 volunteers to participate in the Remembrance Day National Roll Call, which will honor those who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan during 10 years of war. Each volunteer will read 50 names aloud from a list of more than 6,300 service men and women. Every college and university across the United States participating in the event will observe a moment of silence at 2 p.m. EST. Pitt is one of only a few Pennsylvania universities taking part in the National Roll Call. The event is sponsored by Pitt’s Office of Veterans Services, the Veteran Student Association, and Pitt’s ROTC; for more information, call 412-624-9162.
