PITTSBURGH— In an effort to increase the understanding of Sino-American relations and promote educational exchanges between China and the United States, the University of Pittsburgh will be one of more than 50 venues hosting a cyber meeting in the United States and China as part of the National Committee on United States-China Relations program titled “China Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections.”

“China is central to world politics and economics, and ‘China Town Hall’ is an ideal opportunity for the Pittsburgh public to learn about U.S.-Chinese relations from the experts. Pitt is delighted to bring this program to the Pittsburgh community,” said Katherine Carlitz, China studies coordinator in the University of Pittsburgh’s Asian Studies Program.

The Pittsburgh session of the “China Town Hall” will be held Nov. 16 in 4130 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet, Oakland. The program will feature a live Webcast at 7 p.m. with Zbigniew Brzezinksi, who served as national security advisor for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and is now a counselor and trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. Brzezinksi will talk about the direct impact of China’s rapid development on the lives of U.S. residents.

Following the Webcast, participants at Pitt will have a chance to talk with Distinguished Teaching Professor Tom Grunfeld of the State University of New York’s Empire State College. Grunfeld’s session is titled “Troubles in Shangri-La: China’s Ethnic Policies in Tibet and Xinjiang.”

The free public “China Town Hall” program is sponsored by Pitt’s University Center for International Studies, Asian Studies Center, and Global Studies Center.
