Pitt’s Asian Studies Center to Present Spring 2012 ‘Asia Over Lunch’ Lecture Series

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Asian Studies Center will present the Spring 2011 “Asia Over Lunch” lecture series at noon on Thursdays beginning Feb. 2, 4130 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. The brown bag series is open to the public.

The dates, presenters, and titles of the lectures are as follows:

Feb. 2

Mike Roman, Pitt PhD student of anthropology, “Transnational Families—Stories of Migration From Kiribati: A Pacific Context for Evaluating the Human Cost of Climate Change”;

Feb. 9

Sharon M. Quinsaat, Pitt PhD student in sociology, “Waltzing With the Big Boys: Evolution of the Coalition-Building Strategy of the Philippines in the World Trade Organization”;

Feb. 16

Sara L. Sumpter, Pitt PhD student in the history of art and architecture, “An Ill Wind That Blows No Good? A Reinterpretation of the Depiction of Abe no Nakamaro in the Kibi Daijin Nittô Emaki Scroll”;

Feb. 23 

Suzanna Eddyono, Pitt PhD student in sociology, “Citizenship Education in Post-Suharto Indonesia”;

March 1

Cindy Lisica, Pitt adjunct instructor of Japanese art, visual culture, and aesthetics, “The Global Impact of Contemporary Art From China and Japan: Ai Weiwei and Takashi Murakami”;

March 22

Ya-wen Yu, postdoctoral visiting scholar in political science at Pitt, “Islamic Resurgence in Post-Colonial Malaysia”;

March 29

Jay Jing Li, associate professor of history at Duquesne University, “China’s America: The Chinese View the United States, 1900-2000”; and

April 5

Vincent Leung, Pitt assistant professor of history, “The Invention of the Human in Early China: Rereading the Analects of Confucius.”

Also part of the series will be a special lecture by Mythili Ramakrishna, the 2011-12 University Center for International Studies (UCIS) Heinz Fellow, titled “Gender-Based Violence: An Important Neglected Factor in High-Risk Sexual Behavior Amongst Vulnerable Populations (LGBT and Commercial Sex Workers) in India.” It will be held at 4 p.m. April 12 as part of the Global Issues lecture series, cosponsored by Pitt’s Global Studies Center.

Lectures will not be held on March 8 and March 15.
