Pitt Hosts Philanthropist Emmett Carson in March 13 Discussion of Opportunities for Foundations, Communities in Tough Economic Times

PITTSBURGH—The Philanthropy Forum in the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Affairs (GSPIA) will present a lecture by philanthropist Emmett D. Carson, the inaugural CEO and president of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The free public lecture will take place at 2 p.m. March 13 in Ballroom A of the University Club, 123 University Pl., Oakland. 

Carson’s talk, titled “Philanthropy’s Opportunity for Leadership,” will address the appropriate role of philanthropy in helping communities respond to shrinking resources and uncertain economic futures. An RSVP is requested at gspiapf@pitt.edu.

Named as one of the 50 most influential nonprofit leaders in the United States by The Nonprofit Times in 2011, Carson has published more than 100 works on African American philanthropy, social justice grant making, and nonprofit accountability. 

Established in 2007, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation is the largest community foundation on the West Coast. It is dedicated to advancing civic engagement to address the most challenging problems facing California’s San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. 

Carson received his PhD and MPA degrees in public and international affairs from Princeton University; he earned a BA in economics from Morehouse College.

GSPIA’s Philanthropy Forum offers a university-based setting to explore philanthropy’s impacts and intentions. Through research and exchange with philanthropic leaders, the forum highlights advances in the field in an effort to better understand how philanthropy can achieve its promise for impact and greater public good.
