Pitt’s 48th Annual Business Alumni Association Awards Program to Honor Six Professional Leaders and a Corporate Partner April 13

PITTSBURGH—In recognition of outstanding business leadership and contributions to the community, the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration will honor six individuals and one corporate partner at 5 p.m. April 13 at the 48th Annual Business Alumni Association Awards Program in Pitt’s University Club, 123 University Pl., Oakland.

The 2012 Distinguished Alumni award winners are Joseph Guyaux, senior vice chair and chief risk officer for PNC Financial Services Group;, T. Austin Finch Senior Professor of Business Administration in the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University; and Frederick Sutherland, executive vice president, CFO, and group executive for ARAMARK Corporation.

The other 2012 individual honorees are Distinguished Service Award winner Masanobu “Mas” Tsukagoshi, managing partner of IncTANK Inc., Japan; CBA Outstanding Alumni winner William Price, partner at Thorp Reed & Armstrong’s Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring Practice Group; and the H.J. Zoffer Meritorious Service Award winner William C. Byham, chair and CEO of Development Dimensions International.

The Corporate Appreciation Award winner is Crane Company, a NYSE-listed firm with five key business segments: fluid handling, aerospace and electronics, engineered metals, merchandising systems, and controls.  Crane hires Pitt Business students and alumni, some of whom hold key positions in the company.

Brief biographies of the honorees follow.

Guyaux earned an MBA from the Katz School in 1994. He joined PNC in 1972, beginning his career in a management role at a retail branch. He has been instrumental in the growth of PNC’s retail banking business, which now serves more than 6 million customers in 19 states. Guyaux was PNC’s president and head of retail banking until March 2012, when he was appointed to his current position as senior vice chair and chief risk officer. Active in community leadership, he is the chair of the board of directors for Pittsburgh’s Civic Light Opera and is a Life Trustee of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.

Moorman earned her MBA and PhD degrees from the Katz School in 1988. For more than 20 years, she has done research in the field of marketing and has been published in a range of marketing and management journals, including Marketing Science, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Administrative Science Quarterly, and the Journal of Consumer Research.  She is coauthor of the book Strategy from the Outside In: Profiting from Customer Value, which received the 2011 Berry Book prize. Moorman has received several National Science Foundation grants.

Sutherland earned an MBA from the Katz School in 1974. Joining ARAMARK in 1980, he became executive vice president and chief financial officer in 1997. Sutherland was part of an ARAMARK team that took the then-publicly owned company private, creating one of the country’s largest privately held companies. He is on the board of Consolidated Edison of New York and is the president of the Board of Trustees of People’s Light and Theater in Philadelphia, vice chair of WHYY, Philadelphia’s PBS affiliate, and a trustee of Episcopal Community Services.

Tsukagoshi earned an MBA from the Katz School in 1988. He heads the Tokyo office of IncTANK Ventures, a seed-stage investor in technologies emerging from universities in the greater Boston area and in Japan. Since 2004, he has volunteered to run the Katz School’s popular Japan Alumni Network, JANet.  In addition to pursuing a career in investment banking, portfolio management, and international business development, Tsukagoshi is a visiting lecturer at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Nagoya University. 

Price earned his bachelor’s degree from the College of Business Administration in 1998.  Selected as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2010 and 2011, he focuses his practice on bankruptcy, insolvency, and creditors’ rights. An active community member, he is president of the Board of Trustees of The Early Learning Institute, a nonprofit that supports children with developmental delays from birth to prekindergarten. He is also the vice chair of the Allegheny County Bar Association’s Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section Council. 

Byham was instrumental in creating the Katz School’s Executive MBA Worldwide Program, known as the EMBA, working closely with founding director H.J. Zoffer. The EMBA program—designed for established professionals—provides executive-level business instruction and global exposure to key economic markets. Byham, who cofounded Development Dimensions International, is a pioneer in a variety of human resources (HR) technologies used by businesses across the world.  He has created such HR tools as the assessment center method, behavior-based interviewing, behavioral job analysis, Acceleration Pools®, and results-based employee management training and development.
