Pitt and Salvation Army to Host “Christmas Day at Pitt”

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh and the Salvation Army are teaming up again to make Christmas Day a little brighter for more than 1,200 needy adults and children. This is the seventh year for “Christmas Day at Pitt: A Dinner for the Homeless and Needy,” which attracted about 1,100 guests last year and is one of the largest such events in the region. Guests are referred to the event through the Salvation Army.  

More than 250 Pitt faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers will serve guests and help manage the event. Volunteer staff from the Sodexo University Dining Services will prepare the meal.

Each guest will receive a gift bag that will include, among other items, hats, gloves, and scarves donated by the University community. In addition, the children in attendance will receive gifts donated by a number of University units, among them the Offices of the Chancellor, Provost, Community Relations, Governmental Relations, Institutional Advancement, Athletics, Panther Central, Student Affairs, and Human Resources; the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs; the Center for Instructional Development and Distance Education; the University Library System; and the School of Social Work. Gifts will also be provided for children at several local community service organizations, transitional homes, and shelters.

The event is made possible through an arrangement between Pitt's Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and the Sodexo University Dining Services.
