Pitt Professors Available to Comment on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez

Contact:

PITTSBURGH—Recent reports of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s fragile health, which forced him to miss his own inauguration this week, have led to uncertainty about who is running Venezuela and whether Chavez is medically fit to serve his third six-year term in office. University of Pittsburgh professors are available to comment on the situation.

Political Future

Scott Morgenstern, associate professor of political science, is available to comment on how the current electoral situation may play out as well as on Venezuela’s political future. His research focuses on political parties, electoral systems, and legislatures, with a regional specialization in Latin America. Morgenstern may be reached at smorgens@pitt.edu or (412) 330-8938.

Cultural Prospects

John Beverley, professor of Hispanic languages and literatures, is available to comment on both the cultural and political prospects of a post-Chavez Venezuela. He has written and edited a number of articles and books on Latin American culture and politics, including the Duke University Press books The Postmodernism Debate in Latin America (1995) and From Cuba (2002). Beverley may be reached at brq@pitt.edu or (412) 361-8734.
