Learning the Business of Health Care

PITTSBURGH—Health care costs are rising, the industry’s regulations are changing, and medical research and technology are transforming the industry. As such, there is a growing need for health care professionals to learn business analytics and leadership skills.

That’s the idea behind the Katz-UPMC Executive MBA Program in Healthcare to be offered beginning in spring 2017 by the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, in affiliation with UPMC.

The ideal student is a physician or other practitioner, or an experienced manager in health care delivery, insurance, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or a similar field, seeking to advance his or her career and lead organizations in the 21st century. Students will learn from distinguished faculty members who collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and administrators from leading health care organizations nationwide. The program design and course schedule will accommodate a busy doctor or health care professional—students will meet once a month on the Pitt campus for two full-day sessions, which will be supplemented by distance learning.  The program’s geographic footprint is a two-hour flight or six-hour drive from Pittsburgh.

With Pitt being a world leader in the health sciences and health care, students will benefit from the Katz School’s strong relationship with UPMC, as well as the Pitt Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy and Graduate School of Public Health.

“Medicine and management analytics no longer work independently, and the Katz-UPMC Executive MBA in Healthcare will position health care professionals to be change agents for the successful health organizations of the future,” said Carrie Leana, George H. Love Professor of Organizations and Management, director of the Center for Healthcare Management, and academic director for the program.  “We’ve combined three powerful forces—the University of Pittsburgh, the Katz School, and UPMC—to create a program that will be a world-class leader in management education for health care professionals.”

“This program will ensure that tomorrow’s health care executives are exceptionally well prepared to face the competitive challenges and the complex business dynamics that are intrinsic to health care,” said Barbara Barnes, vice president of sponsored programs, research support, and continuing medical education at UPMC.

Through the program’s cohort format, students will learn in a cohesive group during the 19 months that they spend together as a class. The relationships will provide students with a broad peer network across many health care specializations.
