Press Briefing: The Caregiver Project

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Health Policy Institute and the RAND Corporation will announce Sept. 14 a $1 million foundation grant to support The Caregiver Project. The research partnership will be unveiled during a press briefing at 11 a.m. in the Gold Room of Pitt’s University Club, 123 University Pl., Oakland.

The Caregiver Project will serve as a hub for local and national efforts to systematically study and understand caregiver risks and test hospital-based and community-based interventions that provide support and enhance health outcomes for both caregivers and care recipients. The endeavor aims to make Southwestern Pennsylvania a national model for caregiving innovation.

Richard Schulz, professor of psychiatry and director of Pitt’s Gerontology Program within the University Center for Social and Urban Research, recently chaired The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s landmark study “Families Caring for an Aging America.” During the media event, Schulz will provide an overview of the study’s findings and policy recommendations, which help to shape the mission of The Caregiver Project. Everette James, director of Pitt’s Health Policy Institute, and Jeffrey Wasserman, vice president and director of RAND Health, will join Schulz in presenting details of the project.

Following the press briefing, there will be a luncheon and discussion at noon. Funding for The Caregiver Project was provided by the Emily Kelly Roseburgh Memorial Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation and Stern Family Foundation.
