Pitt’s Institute of Politics to Release Report on Improving County Incarceration Policies

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh’s Institute of Politics will present the final report from the institute’s Criminal Justice Task Force at a press conference from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16 in the Teplitz Memorial Moot Courtroom, ground floor, Barco Law Building, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

The report, which is titled “Criminal Justice in the 21st Century: Improving Incarceration Policies and Practices in Allegheny County,” outlines issues facing Allegheny County’s criminal-justice system. The series of recommendations in the report are designed to enhance both the fairness and the cost-effectiveness of the county’s criminal-justice system while maintaining a high-priority commitment to public safety.

Participating in the press conference are County Executive Rich Fitzgerald; Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto; Mark Nordenberg, chair of the Institute of Politics and chancellor emeritus at Pitt; and Frederick W. Thieman, former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the Henry Buhl, Jr. Chair for Civic Leadership at the Buhl Foundation.

Nordenberg and Thieman are cochairs of the Criminal Justice Task Force, which includes 40 members that feature a cross-section of elected officials, academics, criminal-justice practitioners, and community leaders.
