Pitt Law Alumnus, Head of London's Underground, to Deliver Law School Commencement Address May 27
PITTSBURGH--University of Pittsburgh School of Law alumnus Timothy T. O'Toole (LAW '80), managing director of the London Underground, will deliver the law school's commencement address during the 2006 ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. May 27 in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium and Museum, 4141 Fifth Ave., Oakland. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room.
Former president and CEO of Conrail, O'Toole was hired in 2003 by London Mayor Ken Livingstone with the charge of revamping the Underground, or "Tube," one of London's most historic icons. By 2005, modernization plans for the Underground were coming together, but on July 7 at the height of the morning rush hour, three terrorist bombs destroyed a section of the subway trains. Under O'Toole's direction, full restoration of service was completed by Aug. 7.
At a Buckingham Palace ceremony in February, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed one of England's highest honors on O'Toole, awarding him the title of honorary Commander of the British Empire for his record of achievement as managing director of the London Underground and for his service to England during the July 7 crisis.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School in Oakland, La Salle University in Philadelphia, and Pitt's law school, O'Toole served as general counsel, chief financial officer, and senior vice president of law and government affairs, as well as president and CEO during his 21-year career at Conrail.
