Veterans Day Story Ideas
PITTSBURGH-Following are two story ideas for the upcoming Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 11.
New Student Veterans Organization at Pitt
Jay Sukits, assistant professor of business administration in Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, is available to discuss a new student veterans organization at the University of Pittsburgh. Sukits, the faculty advisor for the recently established group, served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Vietnam.
Sukits' teaching and research interests are in capital market efficiency, corporate finance, securities valuation, and portfolio management. He spent 20 years as an investment banker and has held senior positions at Salomon Brothers, E.F. Hutton & Co., Equilease Corp., Smith Barney, and PNC.
Vietnam Veterans Focus of New Documentary
Pitt-Johnstown history professor Paul Douglas Newman, along with Northern Cambria High School social studies teachers and students, produced the 2008 documentary "We Never Got the Welcome Home: Western Pennsylvania Vets Remember Vietnam." The film, funded by a $10,000 "Save Our History" grant from the History Channel, includes interviews with more than 30 area veterans.
"We Never Got the Welcome Home" will be screened at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Pitt-Johnstown Living/Learning Center's Heritage Hall. Newman, veterans featured in the film, and some of the student filmmakers will be available following the screening for questions and answers. The event is free and open to the public.
Newman, who teaches courses in early American history at UPJ, is the recipient of the History Channel's 2008 "Save Our History" Teacher of the Year Award. He earned his bachelor's degree at York College of Pennsylvania and master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Kentucky. He is the editor of "Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic Studies" and has published the book "Fries's Rebellion: The Enduring Struggle for the American Revolution" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2004).
