Pitt Book Center to Host Nov. 11 Author Meet and Greet with Sharon Flake
PITTSBURGH—Author Sharon Flake will take part in a Meet-and-Speak session and will sign copies of her new book, Who Am I Without Him (Hyperion, 2004), at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the University Book Center, 4000 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
A 2001 Pennsylvania Council of the Fine Arts Fellowship winner, Flake writes for the young adult audience. Author of three other books, Flake has spoken at more than 20 Pittsburgh area and regional schools, addressing such issues as the effect of self-esteem on young people. She lives in Pittsburgh with her daughter.
Her first book, The Skin I'm In (Hyperion, 2000), earned the Best Book for Young Adult Readers and the Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers from the American Library Association. It was chosen for the Top Ten Books for Youth by Booklist magazine, deemed one of the 1999 Best Children's Books by Bank Street College of Education, and named to the New York Public Library's 1999 Books for the Teen Age. Flake's other books include Money Hungry (Hyperion, 2001), and its sequel Begging for Change (Hyperion, 2003). She also is the recipient of the 1999 Coretta Scott King New Talent Award.
