SENATOR HATCH TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREE AT PITT LAW SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT
PITTSBURGH, May 25 -- United States Senator Orrin G. Hatch
(R-Utah) will be the keynote speaker at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law commencement on Sunday, May 30, 1999 at 6 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, 4141 Fifth Avenue, Oakland. He will receive an honorary doctorate degree from Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg at the ceremony.
Senator Hatch graduated from Pitt Law School with honors in 1959, and has been a member of the Senate since 1976. As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he is a leader in the fight for tougher anti-crime laws, civil justice reform, and legislation to protect individual property rights. Senator Hatch also serves on the Senate Committee on Finance, where he serves on the Subcommittee on International Trade, the Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight, and the Subcommittee on Health Care.
The Utah senator played a key part in enacting the welfare reform bill, know as the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996, and was particularly involved in the provisions relating to state training prerogatives and child care.
"We are extremely pleased and honored to have Senator Hatch speak at our graduation ceremony," says David J. Herring, interim dean of the School of Law. "In addition to an outstanding career as a public servant, Senator Hatch has been a dynamic and supportive alumnus of our School."
Senator Hatch holds honorary degrees from the University of Maryland, Defense Intelligence College, Pepperdine University, and Southern Utah State University.
