UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 22 -- Nearly 300 high school students from throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania will experience what it is like to discuss and debate critical international issues when they convene at the University of Pittsburgh, Monday, Oct. 25, to participate in the third annual Model United Nations.
Model UN is sponsored by Pitt's University Center for International Studies in conjunction with the World Federalist Association, Pittsburgh Chapter, and the United Nations Association of Pittsburgh. It is designed to give high school students the opportunity to participate in mock sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and other councils incorporating actual political issues of the countries the students represent.
The day-long session begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and an Opening Ceremony at
9 a.m., in Room 121, David Lawrence Hall, 3942 Forbes Avenue.
The program continues for most of the day in the William Pitt Union Building with committee meetings and lunch. The students return to David Lawrence Hall at approximately 3:15 p.m. to plan and conduct a General Assembly meeting and receive awards.
University of Pittsburgh students will participate as committee moderators and mentors.
The 21 schools scheduled to participate are: Belle Vernon Area, Bethel Park, Brentwood, California Area, Carlynton, Chartiers Valley, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Gateway, Hampton, McKeesport Area, Mt. Lebanon, New Castle, North Allegheny, Shaler Area, Union Area, Washington, West Allegheny, Wilmington, Winchester-Thurston, and Yough.
