NEWS FROM PITT: “The Imperative of Integration: Race and Education,” Dec. 9 Lecture at Pitt, Offered by Center on Race and Social Problems
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP) concludes its Buchanan Ingersoll and Rooney PC Fall 2011 Speaker Series Dec. 9 with a noon lecture focusing on race and education.
Elizabeth Anderson, John Rawls Collegiate Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, will discuss “The Imperative of Integration: Race and Education” at noon at CRSP, on the 20th floor of the Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. It is free and open to the public, and registration is not required; lunch will be provided. For more information, call 412-624-7382.
Anderson’s lecture bears the same title as her latest book, The Imperative of Integration (Princeton University Press, 2010). In it, she demonstrates that, despite progress toward racial equality, African Americans remain disadvantaged on virtually all measures of well-being. According to Anderson, only by reviving the ideal of racial integration will our society overcome injustice and inequality.
Anderson also has authored a series of articles on the interaction of facts and values in social science research, paying particular attention to feminist research and research on racial differences. She has written extensively on affirmative action and racial integration, antidiscrimination law (including the law on sexual harassment), and the commodification of women's sexuality and reproductive powers (prostitution, surrogate motherhood). She also is the author of Value in Ethics and Economics (Harvard University Press, 1993).
CRSP’s annual Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Fall Speaker Series provides an opportunity for faculty, students, and members of the community to engage in race-related discussions of mutual interest.
