Race Scholar Joe Feagin Kicks Off Fall Speaker Series at Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems
PITTSBURGH—As President Barack Obama’s campaign for re-election enters its final stretch, scholar Joe Feagin will launch the 2012 Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Speaker Series at the University of Pittsburgh Center on Race and Social Problems with a free public lecture at noon Sept. 13 titled “Obama’s Campaigns and Presidency: No Post-Racial America.”
Feagin, the Ella C. McFadden Professor in Sociology at Texas A&M University, will speak at Pitt’s School of Social Work Conference Center, 20th floor, Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Registration is not required; lunch will be provided. For more information, call 412-624-7382 or visit www.crsp.pitt.edu.
Feagin has dedicated much of his life’s work to studying racism and sexism issues. Examples of this are in his books Racist America (Routledge, 2010); Two-Faced Racism: Whites in the Backstage and Frontstage (Routledge, 2007); Systemic Racism: A Theory of Oppression (Routledge, 2006) and the forthcoming second edition of Yes We Can?: White Racial Framing and the Obama Presidency (Routledge, 2012). His book Ghetto Revolts (Macmillan, 1973) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Feagin was the 1999-2000 president of the American Sociological Association and a guest presenter at the national Race in America conference held at Pitt in June 2010.
The Center on Race and Social Problems’ annual Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC Speaker Series provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community to engage in race-related discussions of mutual interest.
