Pitt Celebrates 50-Year Partnership with Pennsylvania
PITTSBURGH—On July 28, 1966, Governor William W. Scranton signed the bill establishing the University of Pittsburgh as a state-related institution in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During the course of this prosperous partnership, Pitt has educated thousands of Pennsylvania’s best and brightest students.
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives recognized this significant anniversary with House Resolution 956. The resolution, introduced by Representative John Maher (R-40), recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of the University of Pittsburgh. The resolution also designates July 28, 2016, as “Hail to Pitt Day” in Pennsylvania.
The Senate of Pennsylvania issued its formal congratulations. Senator Jay Costa (D-43) sponsored the congratulations, which honored the University for its outstanding contributions to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
“I am certain that with the academic rigor, community support, and innovative nature, the University of Pittsburgh will inspire generations of young people to participate in this success,” said Governor Tom Wolf. “As governor, and on behalf of all the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I am delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh’s incorporation as a state-related institution.”
“The concept of state-related institutions is unique to Pennsylvania,” said Paul Supowitz, vice chancellor for community and governmental relations. “For the past 50 years, Pitt’s partnership with the commonwealth has enabled us to offer discounted tuition to Pennsylvania students while providing them with a world-class education.”
Both the House and Senate commendations lauded Pitt as a major economic driver for the state, driving force of innovation, and provider of a wide range of services in the community.
“In the 50 years since Pitt and Pennsylvania formalized their partnership, the University has made extraordinary contributions to the commonwealth and beyond,” said Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “It’s a partnership of immense value to everyone. Pennsylvania students receive an exceptional education. Employers have an incredible talent pool to draw from. Innovation and resurgence are really driven by public higher education and research universities, and we look forward to continued strong support from our elected officials to drive these ongoing accomplishments.”
